Our Farms
We are a long-established dairy farming business and have milked, and bred Montbeliardes in Somerset for many years. We always have breeding stock for sale and warmly welcome all visitors by appointment.

We sell our meat through small, local, independent butchers and farm shops.

Natural, Sustainable Farming
The support of traditional farming methods and sustainability is still a key feature of Lordswood Farms’ ethos.
Over the past 20 years we have extended the Lordswood Farms group to support other areas of sustainable production. This includes crop rotation that breaks disease cycles and minimises the need for pesticides. The adoption of a healthy rotation of crops, gives us access to a supply of protein rich food for our cattle to include; cereals, pea & barley, beans, maize and red clover.
Animal Welfare
Our farms lie in lush green pastures where our cattle are allowed to graze freely. During the harsher winter season, we provide shelter from the elements where they are fed natural protein rich sources, the majority of which are grown on our farms.
In our work with organisations such as Food Animal Initiative, we have developed commercially viable livestock farming practices that enhance animal welfare, whilst improving the quality of the end product.
The health and welfare of our animals is safeguarded through a heard health plan that is prepared in conjunction with our vets. Further to this, our farms are NDFAS (National Dairy Farm Assurance Scheme) accredited, which means that we undertake to maintain high standards in all aspects of production.
Traditional Farming for Today
Our sustainable farming methods have enabled us to increase life expectancy within our dairy herds whilst enabling us to produce similar milk yields produced with modern intensive farming methods.
The Montbeliarde has been bred for both high quality milk and beef. By maintaining pure bloodlines we are able to select dairy replacements from the best cows and divert surplus heifers and male calves into the production of high quality beef. This process ensures that every animal is highly valued.

Supporting Local Community
We like to take an active role within our locality. Whether it’s organising farm open days or attending school presentations – we want to encourage a better understanding of sustainable farming within the community.
We are also members of L.E.A.F (Linking Environment and Farming), an organisation that encourages farmers throughout the UK to adopt Integrated Farm Management (IFM) and to promote the benefits of IFM to consumers and raise awareness of the way many farmers are responding to current concerns. L.E.A.F’s work in the UK is part of a European wide movement - the 'European Initiative for Sustainable Agriculture' (EISA). For more information click here www.leafuk.org.
Farm Sundays are an annual event organised in conjunction with L.E.A.F, where farmers opens their gates to the general public. It’s a great opportunity for families to learn more about quality farming practices.
Our Farm Director, Neil Darwent, also heads a local farmer’s discussion group where a regular flow of communication within the farming community ensures the best farming methods are shared and compared.
Environmental
Lordswood Farms are committed to a viable agriculture which is environmentally and socially acceptable and ensures the continuity of supply of wholesome, affordable quality produce while conserving and enhancing the fabric of wildlife of our countryside for future generations.
As a farm group, Lordswood have signed up to a DEFRA Entry Level Scheme (ELS) to support local wildlife & protect environment. We have taken marginal land out of farm production, to plant vast woodland areas in order to create wildlife havens.
More red clover than ever is now being planted on our land, which fixes nitrogen from the atmosphere, and naturally increases soil fertility. Also, red clover in cattle diets has been proven to increase Omega 3 levels in both dairy and beef products.
All our farm waste is recycled on farm crops to provide natural nutrients for farm crops. |
